Tax season is upon us again! No doubt all of us will be sorting through piles of mail and frantically searching through our inboxes for those important documents.
During this time of year (and always, really), it’s good to be aware of how and where you’re filing your taxes and your storing important information.
Here are some tips for safe tax filing this season:
Don’t file your taxes on a public network. I think this one goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway just to be safe. Public places and public networks are not secure to keep information safe and private, period.
Keep your physical documents in a safe location. If you receive your tax documents on the job, be sure that you take them home at night and don’t leave them on your desk. We trust our coworkers, but why take a chance.
Keep your digital documents in a safe location. This is where things can get a little dicey. Most of our email addresses are full of private, personal information – if your email account gets hacked, all that information can potentially be stolen. If you’re going to keep your documents online, just make sure your passwords and accounts are up to snuff. Please read our blog post on “How to Build Safe Passwords” for more information.
Make sure you’re filing with a reputable filer (AND that the website you’re using is truly who they say they are). There are a lot of fake websites going around the internet right now that are trying to steal your information by tricking you into giving out your information. (read our blog post that covers avoiding spoofed links online). While we don’t recommend any one filer over another, here are some links you can feel safe clicking on for filing: https://www.taxact.com/ https://turbotax.intuit.com/ https://www.hrblock.com/
Use Antivirus. This is another one that really goes without saying… but we’ll say it anyway. If you’re using a computer, you should have antivirus on it. It’s as simple as that.
Pretty simple! Just be aware of your surroundings and where you’re accessing and storing information – if you follow these steps, you should be safe from information theft. Adopt a healthy cynicism, question things that don’t feel right, and give us a quick call if you have a question about security.
